Realism, Idealism and International Politics By:Martin Griffiths Published on 1995 by Psychology Press Martin Griffiths provides a reinterpretation of the terms |realism| and |idealism| in international relations through a thorough critical examination of three key figures in international theory: Hans Morgenthau, Kenneth Waltz and Hedley Bull. Morgenthau and Waltz are traditionall regarded as the |grand threorists| of realism, but this book argues, contrary to conventional wisdom, that they could more properly be categorized as idealists. Griffiths' contention is that, in addition to imagination, nostalgia and complacency are also forms of political idealism. He argues that Morgenthau's work suffers from the shortcomings of |nostalgic idealism| and Waltz's from those of |complacent idealism.| In contrast, Hedley Bull's analysis of international society is based on a more realistic understanding of world politics. Politics By:Andrew Gamble Published on 2019-02-25 by John Wiley & Sons People so often focus on the negative aspects of politics, like greed and corruption, but without politics we would be lost. It frames everything we do, and it has the power to bring about real and positive change. Politics, Andrew Gamble reminds us, defeated slavery and secured equal rights for women and minorities. Without savvy and principled politicians and citizens willing to engage in political action, there would still be civil war in Ireland and apartheid in South Africa. Closer to home, local politicians stand up for communities and endeavour to advance the prosperity and wellbeing of their constituents. But it hasn’t always been like this, and without good politicians we could throw it all away. By thinking and acting politically, Gamble argues, we can harnes

Deliberative Politics : Essays on Democracy and Disagreement By:Stephen Macedo Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor of Politics and the University Center for Human Values Princeton University Published on 1999-07-30 by Oxford University Press, USA The banner of deliberative democracy is attracting increasing numbers of supporters, in both the world's older and newer democracies. This effort to renew democratic politics is widely seen as a reaction to the dominance of liberal constitutionalism. But many questions surround this new project. What does deliberative democracy stand for? What difference would deliberative practices make in the real world of political conflict and public policy design? What is the relationship between deliberative politics and liberal constitutional arrangements? The 1996 publication of Amy Gutmann and Dennis F. Thompsons Democracy and Disagreement was a signal contribution to the ongoing debate over the role of moral deliberation in democratic politics. In
